Puerto de Ragua - 2,043M

Puerto de Ragua is a mountain pass located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, in the province of Granada, Andalusia, southern Spain. It sits at an elevation of 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest paved passes in the region. This pass is popular among cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts, offering both a challenging ascent and beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

Southern Approach (from Laroles, Alpujarra)

This is the more scenic and popular side for cyclists. The climb starts at around 870 meters (2,854 feet) and ascends steadily with a moderate gradient, providing a mix of open landscapes and wooded areas. The views are spectacular, with the Sierra Nevada and Alpujarra villages visible along the way.

Cycling Difficulty

Puerto de Ragua is classified as a Category 1 climb, meaning it’s a challenging ascent, particularly for amateur cyclists. The steady gradient makes it tough but not as brutally steep as some other mountain passes in Spain. Experienced cyclists will find it a rewarding challenge due to its length and high elevation, combined with its stunning views.

Scenery and Terrain at Puerto De Ragua

Landscape: The climb passes through a variety of landscapes. Lower down, you'll find olive groves and agricultural terraces typical of the Alpujarra region. As you climb higher, the scenery shifts to pine forests and alpine terrain, with stunning views of the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean coastline in the distance on clear days.

Weather: Due to its altitude, Puerto de Ragua can have quite variable weather. In winter, snow is common, and the pass is often used as a cross-country skiing destination. During summer, temperatures can rise, though the higher altitude offers some relief from the intense heat of Andalusia.
