  The Mobel Sport - Cycle Sierra Nevada Scholarship was developed as a way to sponsor young cyclists that may not have opportunity or financial capacity to avail of a cycling training camp. In this section we take 5 minutes for a chat with one of the applicants selected for the 2018 program.

CIAN MAY - CELLEBRIDGE - IRELAND

Who are you?

I'm Cian May, a 17 year old cyclist from, County Kildare, Ireland.

What team do you ride for?

Lucan Cycling Road Club.

Why did you start cycling?

I started cycling initially at the age of 5 racing mountain bikes after watching my dad race since I was a baby.

Have you any sporting backgrounds apart from cycling?

I took a couple of years out from cycling to try my luck as a middle/long distance runner.

What type of cyclist are you? Do you compete in other disciplines, other than road cycling?

I'm a light guy who loves the hills. Any race with some good climbs and I'm happy! My favorite kind of races are the ones where every one is one their hands and knees by the end. Apart from the road I also race cyclo-cross during the winter and the odd mountain bike race during the summer.

Favourite piece of cycling equipment/kit?

Probably my power meter until it broke.

Your greatest achievements on a bicycle?

This year it would be winning the Kilmessan GP, the Navan-Planet X CX series round 1, 2nd at Trophee de l'alpe hill climb. I was also happy with 4th in the Laragh Classic.

Your favourite professional cyclist? (past and present)

Greg Van Avermaet and Vincenzo Nibali.

Most memorable moment/stage win from professional cycling?

Tom Boonen's solo 50km Paris Roubaix win in 2012 or Andy Schleck's solo win up the Col du Galibier in the 2011 Tour.

Your favourite stage race and one day race?

One day race: Paris Roubaix. Stage Race: Giro D'Italia

What's your current favourite music album/song?

Some of the older stuff from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Tell us something we don’t know about you already and you don’t mind the general public knowing?

My second passion (apart from coffee) is playing the guitar.

Hopes and plans for the future?

Seeing how I develop over the next few years and ultimately seeing how far cycling will take me.
