  The Cycle Sierra Nevada Scholarship was developed as a way to sponsor young cyclists that may not have opportunity or financial capacity to avail of a cycling training camp. In this section we take 5 minutes for a chat with one of the applicants selected for the 2019 program.

Roy Duijvesteijn - THE NETHERLANDS

Who are you?

My name is Roy Duijvesteijn, I'm 17 years old and living in Honselersdijk, The Netherlands

What team do you ride for?

Next year I will be riding for WTC de Amstel

Why did you start cycling?

I started with cycling when I was 6 years old on the local races with a normal bike. It was always for the fun (still is) and I was never busy in my mind with winning a race. Until a become U17 and get a trainer from then I started with making fast progression and even winning my first race ever. Last was quite a disappointing year but I'm now on my way back to the top.

Have you any sporting backgrounds apart from cycling?

I have played football when I was younger.

What type of cyclist are you? Do you compete in other disciplines, other than road cycling?

I'm allround rider and which can win a race from a leading group. I also ride on the track.

Favourite piece of cycling equipment/kit?

I try riding with Campagnolo but switch to Shimano because everybody is using it.

Your greatest achievements on a bicycle?

Winning the GC of Tour du Junior in 2017 and winning my first race in 2017

Hennie Kuiper and Niki Terpstra

Most memorable moment/stage win from professional cycling?

Winning my first race in 2017

Your favourite stage race and one day race?

Tour of Flanders (U19 version)

What's your current favourite music album/song?

I like Dance and some Dutch rap music.

Hopes and plans for the future?

I hope to keep developing myself next year when I'm second year of junior and then make the step up to a good u23 team.
